This smoothie is a killer combo of healthy fats, protein and fibre to nourish and support a healthy body. Plant based protein, fats and fibre are the perfect combo because they keep you feeling full longer, stabilise your blood sugar levels and provide you with a sustained energy release which also helps control your appetite and sugar cravings!
Now back to protein, there is an insanely common urban myth claiming that animal proteins reign supreme over plant proteins – not true! You also don’t need to consume huge amounts of protein at each meal, small amounts add up. So, that spoonful of almond butter counts.
Including a variety of plant proteins into your meals and snacks will help you achieve a more balanced diet too. Plant proteins contain other beneficial vitamins and minerals, as well as soluble and insoluble fibres, and no cholesterol (unlike animal sources).
Another reason to embrace plant proteins is research from Harvard which has found that eating even small amounts of red meat, in particular processed red meat, is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
So how much protein do you need? Check out this table here, it depends on a few factors, and if you are hitting the gym hard you might need more than the average person!
Protein is a macronutrient, meaning we need relatively large amounts of it in our diet. Like fats and carbohydrates, it’s hugely important. Present in every cell in the body, our bodies use protein to build and repair tissues, make enzymes, hormones and other chemicals required for optimal health. If you’re not getting enough, it can result in the following:
A sluggish metabolism
Issues with losing weight
Trouble with building muscle mass
Fatigue and overall low energy levels
Poor concentration and trouble learning
Moodiness and mood swings
Muscle, bone and joint pain
To ensure you’re getting enough protein, include a variety of plant based proteins into your meals and snacks. This smoothie is perfect because it is substantial enough for breakfast but also makes a great snack if you’re eating light during the day.
Our creamy vanilla Plant Strong Protein powder is used here. Like all Ceres Organics products, it is certified organic by BioGro, and free from preservatives, chemical additives and other weird ingredients. Each serve has a massive 24 grams of complete protein, and it’s low in sugar! Another great way to use protein powder is to stir it through your overnight oats, it’s a double win because you boost the protein and the flavour. Adding protein powder to bliss balls is also another way to add this macronutrient into your snacks.
A note on clean protein… clean, green protein can be harder to come by than you might think. Pesticides, heavy metals, and antibiotics are abundant in almost all non-organic meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs. To avoid all the negative health effects, go for organic and plant based protein sources where possible.
1 banana, frozen and sliced into rounds
1 cup blueberries, frozen
1-1½ cups Organic Coconut Milk
½ avocado (optional, but adds a bit of extra protein)
